   fatti non foste a viver come bruti,

   ma per seguir virtute e canoscenza'...

...O'frati,dissi,che per cento milia

   perigli siete giunti a l'occidente...

...e volta nostra poppa nel mattino

dei remi facemmo ali al folle volo,

sempre acquistando dal lato mancino...

...the big bow facing the West....the sunset...the wood of the ship converted into feathers,like wings flying to the unknown...going over the end of the world...to that 'sansa gente' world...'

...lo lume era di sotto da la luna,

poi che'ntrati eravam ne l'alto passo,

quando n'apparve una montagna,bruna

per la distanza,e parvemi alta tanto quanto veduta non avea alcuna...

...the high mountain of Purgatory is like a sudden mirage for the astounded an curious sailors...a magic athmosphere,out of time,is a prelude to the Garden of Eden...fragments,symbols of history and hope....joy for catching a glimpse of their destination...that will convert into tears...

...che' de la nova terra un turbo naque,

e percosse del legno il primo canto.

Tre volte il fe' girar con tutte l'acque:

a la quarta levar la poppa in suso

e la prora ire in giu',com altrui piacque,

infin che 'l mar fu sopra noi richiuso.
